Inspired by our inclusive community
I originally moved to the Geelong region two years ago to undertake further study. I was able to achieve this, but what I did not expect was a thriving LGBTIQA+ community. I was in the closet for most of my teenage years, often feeling scared that those in a small country town were not going to accept me. Maybe it had something to do with being on my own and having the urge to explore, but I eventually started to come out of my shell. I started attending LGBT focused social spaces, made a few close friends, and became eagerly anticipating the local rainbow festival.
As both an artist and creative, it didn’t take long for me to express this in my work. I spent a good percentage of last year undertaking a bunch of projects in the Geelong community, both inside and outside of my study. These two aspects eventually crossed when helping with the design and execution of a mural that highlighted diversity and acceptance. I was able to have both a creative and LGBTIQA+ focused input, and I even got to choose some of the final colours!
I think spending these past years in Geelong has had a positive impact on me. It’s helped me to express parts of myself I’ve kept hidden, and finding my own community has influenced me to stay once my studies are over. The Rainbow Festival, which I eagerly look forward to every year, has shown me that you don’t have to go to Melbourne to feel acceptance. As for the future, I have two projects - one art based and one LGBTIQA+ based - which I can’t wait to pick up once the COVID-19 restrictions have eased. And maybe I might end up organising an event or two, I’ve always wanted to be a part of a committee!
